What a Demo Slot Actually Tells You
A demo runs the same game file as the real money version, with play credits in place of cash. The maths, features and bonus rounds are identical. That makes a demo excellent for some questions and useless for others.
What a demo shows you well:
- How the game plays. Whether the base game feels dead between features, how the grid moves, how long a spin takes.
- How the bonus works. Many modern slots have features that are hard to follow from a paytable. Money Train 4 has more than a dozen collector and modifier symbols that interact with each other. Ten minutes in demo mode teaches you more than any written explanation.
- Whether you like it. This is the question that matters most, and the only way to answer it is to play.
What a demo cannot show you:
- Your real return. RTP is measured over millions of spins. After 200 spins your balance mostly reflects luck. A demo that pays well doesn’t mean the game will pay well for real money, and a cold demo doesn’t mean the game is bad.
- The casino’s RTP version. The demo here may run a higher RTP than the version at your casino. The next section shows how to check.
How to Test a Slot in Demo Mode
A useful demo session has a plan. This is roughly how our reviewers approach a new game.
- Set a realistic bet. Demo balances are large, so it’s easy to spin at stakes you would never use. Play at the bet you would actually place so the session feels like real play.
- Play at least 200 base game spins. That’s enough to get a feel for the hit frequency and how often small wins land. It isn’t enough to judge the RTP.
- Trigger the bonus, or buy it. If the demo has a bonus buy, use it several times. One bonus round tells you very little. Five or ten show you the range between a poor feature and a good one.
- Read the volatility against your budget. A high volatility slot with a 25,000x max win can go hundreds of spins without a meaningful win. If your budget can’t absorb that, the demo has done its job by telling you.
- Check the RTP at your casino. Open the game at the casino and look for the RTP in its info or paytable screen. If it is lower than the figure in our review, you are playing a worse version of the same game.

RTP and Volatility, Explained in Two Minutes
Every review on Casino Meerkat shows two numbers above everything else. Between them they tell you most of what you need to know about a slot.
RTP (return to player) is the share of all money staked that a slot pays back over its lifetime. A 96% RTP slot returns 96 units for every 100 staked across millions of spins. The other 4 is the house edge. RTP tells you almost nothing about one session, but over months of play it’s the most important number on the page. Moving from a 96% to a 94% version of the same slot takes the house edge from 4% to 6%, which is half as much again on everything you stake.
Volatility describes how those returns are spread out. Low volatility slots pay small amounts often. High volatility slots pay rarely and pay big when they do, and most of their RTP sits in the bonus round and the top wins. Two slots with the same RTP can feel completely different to play, and a demo shows you that before it costs anything.
